studio2sustain was hired by a client that challenged us to substantially renovate her home without producing off gassing from VOCs – Volatile Organic Compounds – and without encroaching the coastal resource area in front of the house. Bayside is an exercise in restraint; this coastal home was significantly increased in size without expansion into the coastal resource area between the bay and house. Following variance approvals for height, lot coverage, and side and rear setbacks, bayside significantly expanded the living area without compromising views, bayfront resources or existing foundation. We delighted and celebrated the eccentric spaces that emerged from the confined site conditions. Bayside was designed and constructed without any oil-based products, adhesives or finishes inside of the shingles.
