Perched

Perched is the story of an old cottage sited atop a ledge outcropping overlooking the ocean. studio2sustain was invited to help turn this abandoned shell into a habitable, efficient and sustainable coastal structure. Working around exposed timber frames, a dirt crawl space, and an exposed wood interior with an eccentric profile we carefully transitioned Perched form a shell into a home. We celebrated the structure, and increased the habitability by adding bathrooms and a kitchen within the existing volume of the house. The structure was carefully disassembled from the exterior and all insulation, drainage, structural, thermal, electrical and moisture barrier improvements were done from the exterior, preserving the integrity of the timber and wood interior. We used reclaimed material on the interior, and added a solar array on the roof, transforming Perched from a relic into a treasure atop a hill and ensuring her presence for another century.
